Discover the heart of the Sumatran jungle: an unforgettable two days trekking adventure
Experience the heart of North Sumatra’s rainforest with this popular two days jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park. This adventure takes you deeper into the jungle, giving you a greater chance to see orangutans in their habitat.
The program
Day one: Your adventure begins around 9 AM when your expert guide picks you up from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang. You’ll start with a walk to the parks border, where you might spot monkeys, pass by a garden and rubber plantation. Your guide will share insights about the local wildlife and how rubber is made. After a short walk, you’ll reach the park entrance and start your jungle trekking.
Over the next six hours, you’ll explore the jungle, spotting a variety of wildlife such as orangutans, gibbons, thomas leaf monkeys and hornbills. Your guide will point out interesting plants and animals along the way. The highlight of the trek is watching orangutans play and move through the trees. This offers fantastic photo opportunities and an unforgettable experience.
Halfway through the trek, you’ll enjoy a lunch break at a spot we call ‘the jungle restaurant,’ which offers great views of the jungle. After lunch, you’ll continue for about three more hours until you reach your campsite by the river around 4 PM. Here, you can relax, have a swim and enjoy coffee or tea while dinner is prepared.
The dinner is a delicious traditional Indonesian dish. The evening, gather around the candles to play games, share stories and listen to the jungle night sounds. Sleeping in a bamboo and plastic tent, you’ll fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle, next to the Bohorok River.
Day two: Start your day with a delicious jungle breakfast and take some time to relax. After breakfast, continue your jungle adventure with a three to four hour trek. This part of the trek gives you even more chances to see orangutans and other wildlife.
During the walk, you’ll enjoy a tasty lunch in a panoramic spot with beautiful views of the rainforest. Finally, you can refresh yourself in the river and get ready for your adventure with an exciting tube rafting ride down the river, making your way back to Bukit Lawang with fantastic memories.
