About Bukit Lawang
Welcome to the beautiful riverside village of Bukit Lawang. This small village is the perfect starting point to explore Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the most amazing rainforests in Southeast Asia. Located in North Sumatra, Bukit Lawang is a dream for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Gunung Leuser National Park is huge, covering 1,095,000 hectares and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its incredible wildlife. This rainforest is full of life, home to thousands of different animals, plants and insects you won’t find anywhere else.
Some of the park’s most special residents are endangered animals, like the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros, slow loris, elephant and, of course, the famous Sumatran orangutans. Did you know “orangutan” means “person of the forest”? These amazing animals only live here and in one other place on earth.
Trekking through Gunung Leuser is an unforgettable adventure! You’ll walk through thick, green rainforest, listening to the sounds of birds and animals and maybe even spot an orangutan swinging through the trees. Every step in this jungle is a chance to see something new and wonderful!
